Alexander Fieldes has waved the white flag and he won’t be returning with Ginner Hart for the second day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival.
While delighted with the seven-year-old’s resuming run for third in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes, the Wanganui trainer will shy away from a rematch in the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate on September 19.
“We had a crack and beat a few of the guns, but I’m going to pull him out,” Fieldes said. “We’d have to start now to beat Kawi.”A four time winner at Hastings, Ginner Hart will instead be saved for the final day of the meeting on October 3.
“He’ll run in the Group Three race over 1400 metres, but if the track is too dry then we can wait for the Rotorua race that he won last year,” Fieldes said.Ginner Hart beat Fix and Whosyourmaster in the Gr.3 Lion Red Plate 11 months ago and he was also runner-up in the event in 2013.
Fieldes had a day of mixed fortunes at Hastings last Saturday and following Ginner Hart’s bold showing he was brought down to earth by Buck Cannon’s performance in the Rating 65 sprint. The lightly-raced five-year-old ran off under Opie Bosson with 1000 metres to travel and tailed the field home.
“He’s the most ignorant horse known to mankind,” Fieldes said. “He’s probably one of the most talented I’ve had and he would pick Ginner Hart up and eat him without salt.“Opie said he just couldn’t get him to the body of the field and he still had a lot of horse under him pulling up.”
