Kisses completes special day for brothers

3 minute read

Cambridge trainers Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Campin went close to achieving perfection at Saturday’s Hawera meeting.

The brothers were represented by three runners and collected the main prize on the card with Kisses while Satay beat the Rating 85 milers after Sarookh had finished runner-up in the opening event.

The undoubted star of the show was Kisses, who followed up her resuming win at Ruakaka last month with a defeat of the favourite Recite in the Gr.3 Rich Hill Stud Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes.

“She’s a lovely mare and when she came back from Australia for her last preparation she had some very unlucky runs and now she’s put two together,” Fraser-Campin said.

Kisses won the Listed NZB Air Freight Stakes as a thee-year-old before unrewarded Sydney stints with Bjorn Baker and Gerald Ryan.

Since her return, she has added the Listed Easter Cup to her record as well as placings in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile and the Gr.3 Thompson Handicap.

Kisses settled three back on the fence for regular rider Trudy Thornton at Hawera and when the field fanned out on straightening they drove between runners to down Recite by a long neck with Miss Foxwood a solid third.

Stablemate Satay had earlier provided the brothers with a bonus victory in the Johnny Neil Building Handicap.

The mare, who had finished third when resuming at Ruakaka at her previous start, was also ridden by Thornton and the result was of special significance.

“She raced very consistently last preparation and she was very good first-up at Ruakaka where she drew wide,” Fraser-Campin said. “We expected her to go well and she’s in foal to Battle Paint.”

Battle Paint is their resident stallion at Chequers Stud with recent purchase Il Cavallo to join him next season at the completion of his racing career.

Rich Hill Stud Breeders Stakes (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

The G3 feature for fillies and mares was won fair and square by Kisses in 1:23.96 for the 1400m. The time was surprisingly a length inferior to the last winner of the day in a Ratings 85 but that is more likely an indication that the victor Platinum Witness is the real deal this season. Kisses had a good trip between runners to the home turn and it was important all day to be in the first half dozen the way that the track raced. She surged to take the front at the 100m narrowly over the hotpot and was too good. It was the sixth win in twenty-six starts for the now 6yo mare and her first Group win with a G2 placing and a couple of G3 placings plus two Listed wins and a placing already in her record. Recite the hotpot ran a brave second considering she was tardy and trapped wide plus got galloped on in the running. She hit the lead at the 200m and should have gone clear regardless but the winner is better than give credit for it. Miss Foxwood ran a brave third after being wide throughout and looming up fourth and deeper turning for home. Just A Lover disputed the pace mostly and fought well for fourth considering she was wide for a large portion of the race. Bonniegirl caught the eye late after being back and wide plus it showed she could cope against her sex at Group level this season. Te Hana ran on late from the back and needs a roomier trace while the rest were separated by a length and a half in total so bunched across the line. The winner Kisses was too good and she almost won a G2 against all comers last season when beaten by a since G1 winner so her form and record was super. Recite has been beaten more than once as a clear favourite but safely through this she should tackle the males too at G1 under WFA. She is best when percolating behind the pace with a dream sit then can be detonated so the start and draw is paramount for the 5yo mare that tellingly has only won once as a 4yo and older mare. Miss Foxwood still has more blacktype to gather and the 4yo pair of Just A Lover and in particular Bonnie Girl should have bigger things in store.
