Trainer hoping for dream ending

Genuine mare Big Dreamer looks well placed to successfully close out her current campaign at Ellerslie on Wednesday evening.

The four-year-old will shoot for consecutive wins when she runs in the Barfoot & Thompson Twilight Cup, in which she will again be ridden by Samantha Collett.

They combined to beat a competitive Rating 75 line-up at Avondale and trainer Paul Mirabelli said Big Dreamer had done a treat since then.

“I think she has improved, she’s been working well and her coat looks better now.”

Despite Big Dreamer’s current form, Mirabelli is likely to stick with his game plan and send the mare for a break after Ellerslie.

“It’s always been in the back of my mind to give her five runs and then a month off before we start again for the autumn,” he said. “She’s a big mare and still immature, she’s got some filling out to do yet.”

With the rail out 12 metres, inside barrier draws will be a major advantage and Big Dreamer has a handy gate to work with.

“Sam will be able to punch her out and the mare is much happier when she’s near the speed,” Mirabelli said. “She’s very consistent and I’m sure she will be competitive again.”

He isn’t so sure, however, about Big Dreamer’s stablemate Salted Caramel, who will resume in The Nicholas Ditrio Memorial 1200.

“She’s very erratic and quite hard to deal with,” he said. “She’s got the ability, but she lets herself down.

“She’s quite well-bred on her dam’s side and I’m hoping that when maturity kicks in she can win a few.”

Salted Caramel is a grand-daughter of the dual Group One winner Love Dance.
