Smart mare strikes favourable conditions

3 minute read

An easing of the ground at Ashburton was instrumental in a talented mare returning to her best form.

“That’s the one thing that has been missing for Madam Victoria recently,” trainer Terri Rae said.

The daughter of High Chaparral showed her appreciation of the dead surface when she finished powerfully to add Saturday’s Listed Speight’s Timaru Stakes to her record.

Madam Victoria has now won eight of her 18 starts with six of them on rain-affected going, including Listed successes in the NZB Air Freight Stakes and the Warstep Stakes during her three-year-old season.

She was back in the early running on Saturday before apprentice Racha Cuneen set the mare alight at the midway stage.

They improved around runners and Madame Victoria held a strong gallop in the straight to beat Toma Valea, who had finished a creditable last-start seventh in the Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap, and Locket.

Rae also had the favourite and former northern galloper Illuminati in the event and she finished a game fifth after making the pace.

Madam Victoria is raced by former All Black Bevan Wilson and his wife Robyn, who bred the mare from a family that features their 2005 Southern Filly of the Year title winner Royal Miss.

A return too her best form saw Madam Victoria outclass her rivals in a Listed 1400m at Timaru by two lengths and clock 1:24.40. The rain-affected footing helped Madam Victoria stretch out properly and when she does this is a quality mare indeed. It was her eighth win today from just twenty starts and now back too her best she can hit double figures of success this season at least. Toma Valea was a big second coming from last after his usual tardy start and remember he had in his outing before today run a sound seventh in the G1 Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham. Locket was a good third after moving up ominously turning for home and kudos to Meursault that ran on for fourth closer in so was on the slower and unhelpful lanes. Illuminati led and ran a brave race under 59.5kg for a mare so is an obvious improver. She is now a stablemate of the winner so Terri Rae has two potent female sprinter/milers in her yard and should reap the rewards for the second half of this season. Volcano boxed on okay while the next clump of runners plugged away okay considering the runs some of them got throughout. Red Dirt Girl was the biggest flop of the race finishing last but is better than that though she has been very in and out this season. Madam Victoria beat them too easily not to go on with it as once in form has the ping and ability to win anything certainly in the South Island that she is eligible to run in. Meursault and Illuminati the two others to take away from this considering the trip the former got regarding pressure and the part of the track the latter ran on being a slower inside strip the run home.
