Almost a dream day for Tiley

3 minute read

Nigel Tiley enjoyed positive results at both North Island venues on Saturday with Girl Of My Dreams and Brighton.

The Pukekohe trainer produced the former for a deserved success in the Gr.3 Platinum Homes Taranaki Cup at New Plymouth before Brighton ran a cracking trial for the Gr.1 BMW NZ Derby with his fast-finishing second in the Gr.2 Auckland Eye Avondale Guineas at Ellerslie.

The winner of the Gr.3 Phoenix Park 2YO Classic on the course when formerly prepared by Leo Molloy, Girl of My Dreams hadn’t raced since early January after she had missed a start when late scratched at the barrier before the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile.

“We set her for this race after Wellington and I’ve got no doubt that she can go further and get 2200 metres,” Tiley said.

Girl Of My Dreams raced on the pace before Dylan Turner made his move to challenge three wide at the top of the straight and they strode clear to have a length on Silverdale at the post.

“He’s ridden him absolutely beautifully,” Tiley said. “He’s had four rides for me now and ridden four winners.”

Visiting stables continued their domination of the black type events on the card when the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Sewreel continued her winning march in the Listed Bob Sharrock Memorial Oaks Prelude toward a Group One goal.

The Savabeel filly came from the back of the field to account for Maritimo and All In Vogue with a strong staying performance in the hands of Mark Du Plessis and enhance her Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks hopes.

Taranaki Cup (G3)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This G3 1800m Open Handicap saw Girl Of My Dreams remain unbeaten on the tight and often biased New Plymouth track. The visiting mare is now three-for-three here and after sitting outside the leader early then being third across the top moved up turning for home and took control at the 200m. It was her seventh win in thirty-two starts and interestingly her two G3 successes have come at this very track. She won by a length and clocked 1:49.84. Silverdale ran on well late for second after settling down last and then driving through the run home. Storming The Tower found the line well for third once into clear air after getting a soft fence run midfield for most of the race. Rohaise was a sound fourth after challenging for the lead across the top having been sat handy the outer prior. Savaria ran on well late but this track never helped her cause after settling down last so expect improvement once back to a roomier circuit. Just The Tip led and ran okay so is close to some form. Nothing Trivial, Gustavo and Bel Sorriso were all not beaten too far and more rain would certainly help the latter. Tie Me Down was a distant last and has been poor for a while now, so something clearly is not quite right this campaign it seems. Not the strongest G3 so the form worth a tad suspect plus the 1800m is that in between trip where milers can cope and prosper but stayers find it a shade light.
