The lightly-raced son of Coats Choice, who boasts strong form lines around some talented three-year-olds, is in good shape to resume.

Technician will make his first appearance since October when he steps out in the Wanganui Racehorse Owners’ Association 1200, in which he will be ridden by Masa Tanaka.

“He had a jump-out a couple of weeks ago and he ran second to Start Wondering,” trainer Nicola Marshall said.

“I’m pretty happy with him – he’s ready to go.”

Technician gave an early taste of his ability when he ran third on debut last season behind the undefeated Volpe Veloce in the Listed Castletown Stakes. In his first start back this term he finished fifth in the Listed Wanganui Guineas to Highlad, a subsequent Australian black type performer.

Next up, he beat the recent winner Stephenstihls at Awapuni before he was unplaced in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas behind Mongolian Falcon.

“He had a wide draw and didn’t get the best of luck at Hastings and then he developed a splint so we put him aside,” Marshall said.

The future of Technician will become clearer after his Wanganui outing.

“He’s Singapore-owned so he may end up over there,” Marshall said. “He’s also starting to get a bit colty so he may need to be gelded.”

Technician is raced by Constance Cheng, who is a regular buyer of New Zealand and Australian yearlings and she currently has six other horses in work with Marshall.
