Promising Dragon Dynasty scores back-to-back wins

3 minute read

Clearly in excellent form, the Brian Dean-trained Dragon Dynasty powered home to make it back-to-back wins in the $100,000 Open Benchmark 83 race over 1200m on Sunday.

A former Malaysian galloper that has won in three races from nine starts up North, including the 1200m Leg of their 4YO Challenge last year, the five-year-old son of Hold That Tiger won smartly at his second start at Kranji last month in a 1200m Class 3 race on Polytrack, after jockey Danny Beasley observed during the barrier trials that his charge had outstanding ability on the alternative surface.

With one of the favourites Power Lion scratched earlier due to a lame left hind, the freshened-up Dragon Dynasty with Beasley up again went forward to chase bold frontrunner Exceed Express (Corey Brown) upon jumping.

At the 300m, the two horses in front kicked clear from the other seven opponents, and while $14 favourite Exceed Express hung on valiantly on the fence, Dragon Dynasty ($20) let down nicely for Beasley and motored past his rival to score by three-parts-of-a-length. Also a last-start winner, Darci Charmer (Barend Vorster) was another four-and-a-quarter-lengths away in third.

The winning time on the Polytrack was 1min 11.2secs.

Owned by Koh Siok Choo, Dragon Dynasty already has 11 starts over 1200m under the belt, and Dean thought the plan for him next year could be a step-up to a 1400m race.

“1400m should be spot-on for him,” said the Australian conditioner, who was bringing up his 32nd and final win this season.

Beasley commented that the fast pace of the race suited Dragon Dynasty, and with his good turn of foot, he exploded away to a most impressive win.

“This horse came with good credentials from Malaysia, and he already ran well first-up,” said Beasley who was bringing up his 83rd and final 2014 winner to cement his runner-up spot to Manoel Nunes (108 wins), but also, sadly, his final winner to his Singapore stint.

“There was good speed in the race, he has a good turn of foot, and just keeps on improving with every run.

“Credit to Brian and Mark (Gallagher, Dean’s stable supervisor) for the hard work put in looking after this horse.”

It had been a great season for Beasley in 2014 as well, but that success of Dragon Dynasty unfortunately brought curtains on a successful seven-year stay in Singapore.

Having won for both local trainers like Alwin Tan, Mohd Yusof, Leslie Khoo and Sonny Yeoh and expatriate trainers including Laurie Laxon, Michael Freedman, Steven Burridge, Theo Kieser and many more, the 39-year old has proven his efficiency time and again, especially this year which many reckon has been his best year, given the bevvy of top-class gallopers such War Affair, Affleck or Faaltless that he has been associated with.

The soft-spoken jockey is also well appreciated for his detailed post-race debriefs on TV interviews, always giving his honest feedbacks about the races and his mounts. Though local fans will not see him at Kranji in the new season, Beasley assured that the next chapter of his life will still involve riding, the only talent he has known since he was a kid.

“I should go back to Sydney and be with my family for Christmas this holiday, and having been here for seven years now, I guess I will miss everything in Singapore," he said.

“There isn’t a 100% confirmed plan as yet, but I would probably be riding in Sydney.

“I guess I’m still fit and racing, so yeah I will be riding horses, it’s what I've done all my life.”
