3 minute read

Sam King may have failed to get on the board yesterday, but he returns with three selections including a pair of wagers from Beverley this evening.

Ayr is our first port of call, and the Jim Goldie-trained Ayr Poet should be bang there in the concluding Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap at 5.25.

The eight-year-old very rarely runs a bad race around here and arrives having been denied a nose over ten furlongs at this venue seven days ago.

Dropping back to a mile will pose no issues for this previous course and distance winner, but it's the refitting of cheekpieces that really catches the eye. Jim Goldie's runner has had just four outings in the headgear (one win and one place), and it certainly looked as though it may aid his chances when going down narrowly here last week.

There should be a genuine gallop on for him to aim at with a number of confirmed front-runners in the line-up and it's hard not to see him going close off an unchanged mark of 57.

Selection: Ayr Poet – General 9/4

We head to Beverley for our final two selections and the Skybet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Handicap at 7.00 looks like an interesting handicap.

In The Shoes is sure to be popular dropping in class after an excellent second in a Newmarket (July) handicap a week ago, but the race panned out well for her that day and it may not do so this evening.

Instead, it could be wise to side with Ugo Gregory. The likeable grey has become something of a course specialist over the years with four wins and three placings from twelve visits to the Yorkshire venue.

The gelded son of Gregorian had plenty to spare when scoring by a couple of lengths over course and distance last week and with a good draw in stall four, a 4lb penalty may not be enough to anchor Tim Easterby's charge from going in again.

Selection: Ugo Gregory – General 4/1

The Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Handicap at 8.00 features some interesting in-form contenders but once again I'm taking a chance on a course specialist.

Recent Carlisle winner Dandy's Angel deserves her place at the top of the market while there is definitely a case to be made for Precedent.

However, there doesn't look to be much pace on up front and neither of the aforementioned pair will be suited by that. The ten-year-old Bit Of A Quirke was slightly below par when fifth over track and trip a week ago, but he stands out as the sole front-runner here and there's every chance he'll get something of a freebie out in front.

The Monsieur Bond gelding is a six-time course and distance scorer and has proven form on heavy ground. He placed off 5lb higher here on his seasonal reappearance in April and looks too well-handicapped to ignore in a contest such as this.

Selection: Bit Of A Quirke – General 9/2
