Mqse De Sevigne pounced late under Alexis Pouchin to deny Via Sistina in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville on Sunday.
Jamie Spencer always had Via Sistina in a comfortable position on the outside of the group and as the field straightened up for home, the five-year-old cruised to the front of the field. Alexis Pouchin asked the André Fabre-trained Mqse De Sevigne to chase the UK raider home and she willingly made up ground in the closing stages to defy Via Sistina by a head. Above The Curve finished third for trainer Joseph O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore.
The success marked back to back Deauville Group 1 victories for Mqse De Sevigne, having won over a mile in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild two weeks ago. It was a third top-level success within the month for jockey Alexis Pouchin, who had not won a Group 1 prior to Mqse De Sevigne's victory in the Prix Rothschild. He claimed a second Group 1 victory when taking the Grosser Preis von Berlin in Germany aboard Simca Mlle last Sunday.
Paddy Power have shortened Mqse De Sevigne from 14/1 to 6/1 for the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on 7 October. André Fabre won the mile contest with Esoterique in 2015.
