Queen’s Vase winner Gregory will remain in training with Ascot Gold Cup aspirations in 2024.
The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt claimed a Group 2 success in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in June, before a disappointing run in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, he set a fast tempo in the York contest and was unable to rally in the closing stages, finishing third behind subsequent St Leger winner Continuous.
With rain forecast for the Doncaster Classic, Frankie Dettori chose to partner stablemate Arrest and Kieran Shoemark took over the ride. Although Gregory hit the front with three furlongs to go, the three-year-old weakened into fifth.
"I think he's going to be better on top of the ground and he still ran an admirable race [in the St Leger]," said Richard Brown, Wathnan Racing's advisor.
"He's a big colt and by the far the biggest, most scopey horse in that field and he's only going to get better from three to four.
"He still ran with credit, but we'll put him away now and we'll look at turning him into a Cup horse next year.
"I think he's got a very high cruising speed and he can sustain that, so I think that is what way we will be looking at."
