Fallen Angel could return for autumn campaign after setback

3 minute read

Yorkshire-based trainer Karl Burke enjoyed a magical day when Fallen Angel and Darnation recorded 1000 Guineas victories in Ireland and Germany last month and has issued an update on his star pair.

Victorious in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes as a juvenile, Fallen Angel was unable to land a blow in the 1000 Guineas on reappearance but bounced back to her superb best with a comfortable success in the Irish 1000 Guineas. A setback ruled the filly out of a Guineas rematch in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and Burke remains hopeful that Fallen Angel will return to the track this season.

"She's got a small bit of bone bruising, but it's nothing serious. We'll leave her alone now and hopefully she'll be ready for September and an autumn campaign," he said.

"She'll be back in steady work in the next week or so, but we won't rush her back, we'll prepare her from September onwards."

Meanwhile, stablemate Darnation will head to Newcastle on Friday for the Group 3 Hoppings Fillies' Stakes, her first attempt over ten furlongs. Whilst victory in the contest could give Burke an idea of how Darnation rates against fellow British-trained fillies, he is keen to return to Germany for further Classic glory.

"She's in good order and looks great. We're stepping up in trip, mainly because we're keen to go back to Dusseldorf for the German Oaks, which is over a mile and three (furlongs)," he added.

"She's never run on the all-weather, but she works on it most weeks and certainly seems to work well enough on it at home. We're looking forward to seeing her run and hopefully she can put up a good show."
