• Only once in the past 25 years has the Victoria Derby winner not finished in the first three at their final lead-up race and that winner, Redding in 1992, had finished fourth in the MV Vase.

• Seven of the past nine Derby winners have come through the Vase, but two of the past three have come through different races. Rebel Raider (2008) came via the Geelong Classic and Monaco Consul (2009) the Spring Champion Stks.

• The Geelong Classic-Victoria Derby double hasn't been completed since Haymaker in 1974. Gorky Park (2nd in 2006) and Stony Bay (3rd in 1994) are the only Geelong Classic winners to run a place in the Derby in the past two decades. Late entry Induna is striving to complete the double this year.

• Amalfi (2001) is the most recent Norman Robinson Stks winner to go on and win the Derby. Like this year's Norman Robinson winner Sabrage, Amalfi had finished third in the Stutt Stakes at his previous run.

• Recent Derbies have been dominated by horses near the top of the field. In the last 10 years, Benicio – who carried No 9 in 2005 – is the only winner to carry a saddlecloth number greater than four.

• Efficient, who started at $2.40 in 2006, is the most recent favourite to win the Victoria Derby. Sydney visitor Manawanui will be a commanding favourite on Saturday.
