Epsom’s Derby is an annual highlight

Probably the most famous race in the world is the Epsom Derby and it is on this weekend from the Epsom Downs in Surrey.

Some of the most celebrated names in all of racing and also breeding have won the mile and a half classic such as Sea The Stars, High Chaparral, Galileo, Lammtarra, Nashwan, Shirley Heights, Sea Bird and of course the storied Shergar.

There was a run to start the 1970s of Nijinsky, Mill Reef and Roberto and so you can see the history the race embodies.

2017 Investec Derby - Wings of Eagles

Rumoured to have been established at a party celebrating the running of the Oaks in 1779, the name was said to have resulted from a coin toss between the Earl Of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury.

Aidan O’Brien made it six Derbies last year as Wings Of Eagles provided a huge upset at 40-1 over some big names like Cracksman.

Back in the field, beaten some way, was a horse called Rekindling and we know what he did in November.
