Historical Analysis of the Coolmore Classic
COOLMORE CLASSIC - G1 1500m
While the Coolmore Classic was for many years the only G1 event for the F&M, it still attracts the Autumn mares championship.
There has been the addition of the Myer Classic, Queen of the Turf, Tatts Tiara and Sangster Stks but the one difference the Coolmore has is that it is the only handicap.
Two trainers have dominated the race - Gai Waterhouse and the amazing record of Max Lees who won it 5 times from Newcastle. Ron Quinton made it five in combined disciplined last year. Check out the original ladies race.
PROFILING THE RACE
o Barriers have become of less importance.
o The 3yo fillies have held their own winning 8 of the last 25. Of the older mares in recent seasons, only Sunline has won post her 5yo year before Alverta, Steps In Time and Plucky Belle.
o An absolute blow out for the favourites. Apart from the great Sunline, there’s barely a primary elect in sight.
o Gai Waterhouse has won this race 4 times and needs one to emulate Max Lees five winners (Shindig/Chlorophyll/Flitter/Quicksilver Cindy/Satin Sand).
o Last 10 Winners Most Prevalent Age of winner - 4/5/6yo (3 times)
o Last 10 Winners Average Weight of winner - 54.0kg

RECENT WINNERS
2018 - DAYSEE DOOM 5m (Domesday x See A Victory) ($21)
Jockey: Andrew Adkins, Trainer: Ron QuintonBarrier: 14, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:28.28
Margin: 0.2L, Track: Good (4), Starters: 172nd: Oregon’s Day (51.0kg), 3rd: Silent Sedition (57.5kg)
Review: Ronny Quinton is one of the most respected in the business. He won this race twice as a jockey and this made it three times as a trainer.
Daysee Doom has always been a much loved mare but hadn’t been able to secure a G1. When you are carrying that much weight and racing on the speed, there should be few excuses for the remainder.
She was there for all to beat her but none could get past. It must be said Raiment, Egg Tart and Alizee were unlucky but Daysee was so good.
2017 - HEAVENS ABOVE 5m (Street Cry x Reggie) ($26)
Jockey: Tye Angland, Trainer: Tim MartinBarrier: 4, Weight: 55.0kg, Gross Time: 1:29.65
Margin: 0.1L, Track: Soft (6), Starters: 192nd: Silent Sedition (54.5kg), 3rd: Danish Twist (54.5kg)
Review: Tim Martin hadn’t won a G1 since Typhoon Zed’s couple in 2008. He’d had his ups and downs but was still well regarded as a horseman.
The mare had a habit of winning a race a preparation and after placing in the Queen Of The Turf last Autumn, was close up in the Epsom and Myer Classic. Never in the Millie Fox first up, she always ran well second up.
Sitting midfield she needed a run but once pulled wide, she surged over the top of them. It was a nose by a nose with Silent Sedition unlucky being wide the trip. The favourite Omei Sword bled so had genuine excuses.
2016 - PEEPING 4m (Redoute’s Choice x Miss Marielle) ($15)
Jockey: Sam Clipperton, Trainer: Ron QuintonBarrier: 9, Weight: 53.5kg, Gross Time: 1:27.53
Margin: 0.5L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 122nd: Azkadellia (53.0kg), 3rd: Solicit (56.0kg)
Review: Fillies and Mares were coming from all over the place for what many consider the best of the female features but it was a little girl from Sydney who took the prize. Despite being comfortably held in both her lead ups, Peeping was peaking but could she run the 1500m.
As trainer Ron Quinton said after the race, if she was ever going to run it, the Rosehill course is the best one to do it on. With strong tempo set by Solicit, Clipperton found a nice spot one off but coming to the turn she just was left flat footed.
As the leaders tired, Peeping picked herself up and worked to the front before holding off the fast finishing Melbourne mare Azkadellia. It was Clipperton’s first and he was elated it was with his old boss.
