Sydney’s training premiership record is looming large for Chris Waller as he bids to surpass 156 winners in the metropolitan area for the 2012-13 season.

The record of 156 wins is held jointly by Gai Waterhouse (2002-03) and her father Tommy Smith (1975-76) but there appears little doubt Waller will pass the milestone prior to the end of this season on July 31.

Waller has trained 143/5 winners this season and has an unassailable lead in the premiership.

Peter Snowden (68.5 wins) and Gai Waterhouse (68) are locked in a close battle for second place.

Waller has entered 19 horses for Saturday’s June Stakes meeting at Randwick including four horses in the $100,000 Listed June Stakes (1200m).

His June Stakes entries comprise Red Tracer, Balavan, She’s Clean and Riva de Lago while he has two nominations for the $100,000 Stayers Cup over 3200m.

They include Thubiaan. who is set to return from a successful five-start Melbourne campaign which reaped a win at Flemington over 2800m and placings at Moonee Valley twice and Flemington twice.

Permit is Waller’s other entry for the Stayers Cup, coming off a last start fifth behind Fuimicino on a very heavy track in the WJ McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick.

Other Stayers Cup nominations include last start winners Peal Of Bells (Gwenda Markwell), Tognetti (Guy Walter), Unchain My Heart (David Hayes) and Piazza San Pietro (Bede Murray).

The latter was a near seven lengths winner of the inaugural Marathon over 2500m at the Wagga Cup carnival last month.
