Sweet Idea has returned in ideal fashion taking out the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes on Thursday.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly profiled as a rating’s special at Wyong on Thursday where she looked pitchforked into the event under set weight conditions.
Away fairly, jockey James McDonald urged the filly along from barrier 1 to take up the lead.
While main danger Weinholt loomed large on straightening, Sweet Idea was able to hold him at bay for a half length victory.
“She is a filly that never makes it look easy,” Stable Foreman Mark Newnham said.
“Everything she does she needs to be made to do. I stressed that to James before he went out that she takes a fair bit of riding.
“The best thing James did was bounce her and be positive on her and as soon as he gave her a couple with the stick, changed whip hands away she went.”
Her win provided the Gai Waterhouse stable with three winners for the afternoon and a double for James McDonald.
“She is a good filly and is going to improve a lot with the run,” McDonald said.
“Class got her through in the end. When I quickened up she put a couple of lengths on them quickly and was just waiting for them a little bit.”
Second in the lucrative Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in January, Sweet Idea will return on January 11 for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).
She is now a $4.20 favourite for the event ahead of stablemate Aussies Love Sport and Missy Longstocking.
It was her first run since incurring a three month ban after she bled during a narrow second to Thump in the Silver Shadow Stakes early this season.
Sweet Idea’s juvenile campaign was top shelf with a Silver Slipper Stakes success followed by a minor placing in the Golden Slipper behind stablemate Overreach.
