Mr Individual Could Back Up On Saturday

3 minute read

Co-trainer Troy Corstens hasn’t ruled out backing up Mr Individual in a stakes race on Saturday after his win at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Mr Individual missed a run in last week’s Caulfield Guineas when named the first emergency but gained some consolation with an all-the-way win in the Movenpick #RaceDayIceCream Plate over 1600 metres.

Jockey Mark Zahra took the colt straight to the front from the outside draw in the small field and stacked up his rivals before turning the son of Starspangledbanner loose in the straight.

Mr Individual ($2.30 fav) went to the line strongly to defeat He’s Our Rokkii ($2.90) by a length and a half with Manhattan Blues ($13) a further two and a quarter lengths away in third.

Troy Corstens said Mr Individual was learning to relax with race experience and believed the colt would be a better horse in the autumn.

Connections had gone into Wednesday’s race thinking the outing could be his last for the spring but Corstens did not rule out backing the colt up in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on Saturday after accepting for the race that morning.

The Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on the opening day of the Flemington carnival could also be an option.

Promising colt Mr Individual has now raced five times for three wins. He soon worked across to take the lead and he then really slowed the pace (first 1000m 1:05.15), travelling comfortably. The pace picked-up from the 600m, he got a good break on straightening and went on to win easily in the sprint home (last 600m 34.26). He’s Our Rokkii was fourth, one out and one back, moved up (three deep) nearing the home turn but had little chance with the winner in the sprint home, battling on for a sound second after being disadvantaged by the slow early tempo.
