English has drawn gate 10 in a field of 11 for the 2016 Shorts.

Winner of the 2016 All Aged Stakes at her last appearance during the autumn carnival, English resumes in the 2016 Shorts off two barrier trial wins.

She is one of two Group 1 winners in the 2016 Shorts with Japonisme (Hugh Bowman) drawing barrier four.

The 2016 Shorts will be a launching pad for the spring carnival aspirations of several runners with Clearly Innocent (Brenton Avdulla) in nine and Dothraki in five among those resuming from spells.

Also first up in the 2016 Shorts will be Ball Of Muscle (Kerrin McEvoy) from the inside gate, Takedown (Tim Clark) in six, Kaepernick (Christian Reith) in two and Howmuchdoyouloveme (Craig Williams) in three.

Rounding out the 2016 Shorts field are Smart Volatility (Tye Angland) from barrier eight, Boss Lane in 11 and Sarajevo (James McDonald) in seven.

Takedown put up a good effort in winning here. He began well and settled in third place, one off the rails, behind a solid tempo. He challenged strongly coming to the 200m and then dug deep over the closing stages to score a narrow but good win, his first win at Group Two level. Ball Of Muscle went to the front, travelled along at a good pace and fought gamely the straight, only being headed in the closing stages for a good second. Kaepernick was back in seventh place on the rails, got between runners at the 300m and kept battling on very well along the rails over the closing stages for a close-up and promising third at this first run this preparation. Dothraki raced in second place, challenged in the straight and then held on well for a close-up fourth. The favourite English settled back in eighth place, commenced a wide move shortly after straightening and made ground, without threatening, for a sound first-up (1.8 lengths) fifth.
