An impressive field of 12 has been assembled for the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Following his first up win in the Regal Roller Stakes (1200m), Vega Magic holds favouritism ($2.30) for the Memsie Stakes.
The five-year-old is unbeaten from two starts since arriving at the Hayes-Dabernig stable from Western Australia where he’d already built an imposing record.
He sits at the top of betting for the Memsie Stakes ahead of Group 1 winners Black Heart Bart, Le Romain and Hey Doc who share equal second favouritism at $6.50.
Black Heart Bart is looking to defend his 2016 Memsie Stakes title and if successful would be the first since champion mare Sunline in 2000-01 to claim consecutive Memsie successes.
Another Group 1 winner in Yankee Rose is the first of the double figure chances quoted at $11.00 as she resumes from a generous spell since disappointing as favourite in the Victorian Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last November.
Three Group races are conducted in the lead up to the Memsie Stakes, the first of them being the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds.
The unbeaten Ciaron Maher-trained Merchant Navy holds favouritism $2.60 for the event resuming after a highly encouraging maiden campaign last autumn.
He does however give away race fitness to perceived main dangers Trekking and Kobayashi who each contest the event second up.
The mares do battle in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) where the Hayes-Dabernig stable saddle up favourite Fuhryk.
A dual Group winner last season, Fuhryk appears well suited under Set Weights plus Penalties conditions.
Consistent mare Sullivan Bay is a solid Plan B for the Hayes-Dabernig Team while a market watch is advised about Group 1 winning mare Miss Cover Girl who makes her stable debut for Darren Weir.
The Caulfield quaddie commences with The Heath (1100m) at 3:30pm.
Another Set Weights plus Penalties affair, the proven class runners are particularly well suited, namely the Group 1 performed sprinters Sheidel and Voodoo Lad.
Sheidel and Voodoo Lad sit at the top of the market, quoted at $2.80 and $4.20 respectively.
