Gallic Chieftain came into calculations for the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with a strong-staying effort in winning here. Having his third run this preparation, he settled back in tenth place, before improving nicely (between runners) from the 600m. He switched deep on passing the 300m and then came with a well-timed run to grab victory at the post by a half-length. Chris Waller-trained Irishbred import Shraaoh has now been placed in three of his last four starts this preparation. He settled back in 11th place, tracked up (deep) from the 800m, moved up well on turning for home, hit the front nearing the 100m and then fought well for second. Semari raced in eighth place, between runners, got a split at the 300m, challenged at the 200m and kept battling well for third from Sir Charles Road, who ran on well from 13th for (1.9 lengths) fourth. The favourite, the British-bred Supernova, was well back in 14th place and made ground along the rails and then fought on well for (2.1 lengths) sixth at his third Australian start in this Group 2 race.
