Weekend Wrap: Nunes showing class, Hickmott's good spirit

3 minute read

Manoel Nunes was a dominant force in the saddle at Morphettville on Saturday with his first treble on the Parks.

Manoel Nunes has ridden eight city winners, with 11 placegetters, from his 39 city rides and has quickly made inroads in the Premiership race since calling South Australia home.

He got things rolling via an armchair front running ride on Jacks On Ice for the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable before Fleurieu Flipper turned his form around to come from the back and win for Ros Day.

Nunes big day rounded out in the last when he got Mighty Sapphire home for the Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor stable.

"I'm very glad to get the support and get the job done,'' Nunes said.

Rochelle Milnes grabbed herself a double with Easy Campese continuing the impressive run of trainer Sarah Rutten before Tippa proved too strong later in the day.

Tippa was the first leg of Shayne and Chelsea Cahill's first city double since they became official training partners this season with The Gov completing their big day.

"All the hard work you put in, it makes it worth it,'' Shayne said.

A noted soft track specialist, The Gov produced a big finishing burst to get over the top of rivals and Cahill said it was a nice result for connections with the mare having been out of the winner's stall for 17 months.

"She's a tricky little mare, but really tough and tries her guts out,'' Cahill added.

"She's settled down a fair bit the last six months, it's been a pleasant surprise she was able to win on this track,'' he said.

Spirit Of Camelot didn't let her supporters down when she justified a big push from her trainer Michael Hickmott to score a 2.55 length victory with Todd Pannell in the saddle.

"She's been going really good,'' Pannell said.

"We were confident she would run well. She's only got more improvement in her,'' he said.
