Australian men's rugby sevens skipper and three-time Olympian Nick Malouf has made the Olympic Games in Paris his swansong.

Tributes are pouring in for Australia men's rugby sevens captain and three-time Olympian Nick Malouf, who has announced his retirement.

The 31-year-old decided to call time on a glittering career on Saturday, making the Olympic Games in Paris his swansong.

"I could never have believed I'd be so lucky to enjoy the last 12 years playing the game I love in the company of such great people," Malouf said in a Rugby Australia statement.

"Rugby has given me so much and I am so thankful. What a privilege it's been."

Malouf scored 82 tries and posted 410 points in an international career that began in 2012 and included 61 world series tournaments.

He played for Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio before going on to lead the team at two Olympics, losing in the quarter-finals in Tokyo and then in the semis to Fiji in Paris. 

Australia sevens coach John Manenti said Malouf proved to be an "amazing leader."

"For years he's driven this group and is the most successful Australian men's sevens captain in terms of World Series wins, tournament wins and Olympic performances," Manenti said.

"But most of all he's a great man and we wish him every success in the business world."
