Tristan Carter says it's incredible to train with slalom canoe superstar Jessica Fox and feels he will continue to improve on his Olympic C1 ninth placing.

Tristan Carter isn't satisfied with a top-10 finish in the men's canoe slalom with the Australian paddler already looking ahead to Los Angeles in 2028.

In the wake of Jessica Fox's K1 victory at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, 26-year-old Carter chased gold in the C1 on Monday in his Olympic debut.

He produced a clean run in the semi-finals to be ranked eighth going into the medal but dropped a spot to place ninth.

The event was comfortably won by Frenchman Nicolas Gestin, to the delight of a raucous home crowd, with Brit Adam Burgess taking silver and Slovakia's Matej Benus holding on for third.

Carter said he felt like he had plenty of improvement in him.

"I'm still young and I feel like I've got a lot more in me," the Melbourne-born athlete said.

"I know I have a medal in me.

"This is only the beginning, I feel like I can get a lot better - goals haven't been achieved yet so I want to savour this and then get cracking again."

Carter moved from Melbourne to Penrith to train alongside Fox who he said was the GOAT of the sport.

"It's incredible to train every day with Jess, she is by a long shot the greatest of all time in our sport so to be able to call her for a chat is insane," he said.

Fox will be back in the water on Tuesday to begin her C1 title defence.
