MEMSIE STAKES – G1 1400m

The Memsie Stakes at Caulfield has been won by some darn fine horses. Previous years it has contained a large number of new season 4yos and several G1 winners.

Let's see what this year's Memsie might throw up as to whether it is a great Spring preview. 2013 was the first as a G1 and it was a cracker.

PROFILING THE RACE

  • The Memsie is a race where good WFA horses win.
  • It has been a top race for mares with Atlantic Jewel, King's Rose, Miss Finland, Makybe Diva, Magical Miss, Sunline (twice), & Dane Ripper winning since the 1998.
  • Track conditions certainly play a part but it hasn't been disadvantageous to get back and swoop late over recent years. In fact 12 of last 17 came late up the middle of Caulfield.
  • Softer barriers have helped the cause.
  • Favourites have had a very good run taking 12 of last 21.
  • Last 10 Winners Most Prevalent Age of winner – 5yo (4 times).
  • Last 10 Winners Average Price of winner - $6.30
  • Breakdown of winners - 7 geldings, 1 entire & 2 mares
  • Races that the winner ran in prior - Regal Roller Stakes (1), Spring Stks (2), Liston Stks (1), Spell (6)
  • Last 10 Years - No of Caulfield Cup winners who ran in Memsie – 0
  • Last 10 Years - No of Cox Plate winners who ran in Memsie – 0
  • Last 10 Years - No of Melbourne Cup winners who ran in Memsie – 3

RECENT WINNERS

2020 - Behemoth 5g (All Too Hard x Penny Banger) ($3.25 fav)

Jockey: Craig Williams, Trainer: David Jolly

Barrier: 2, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 1:22.71

Margin: 1.5L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 13

2nd: Mr Quickie (59.0kg), 3rd: Glenfiddich (50.5kg)

Review: For the second year in a row the little ole Spring Stakes in Adelaide produced the G1 Memsie winner. This win was one for the battlers. Unlike the multi-million dollar yearlings and rich studs, this was a $6k purchase and what a result.

Behemoth had run well in big races before but not gotten the big result. Courtesy of a lovely barrier and top ride, he was right there to pounce on the corner. Williams got him clear off the leader's heels and he put a gap in them early enough to withstand any late charge.

2019 - Scales Of Justice 7g (Not A Single Doubt x Beymatilla) ($3.75)

Jockey: Dean Yendall, Trainer: Lindsey Smith

Barrier: 5, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 1:22.14

Margin: 0.8L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 13

2nd: So Si Bon (59.0kg), 3rd: Alizee (57.0kg)

Review: Perth horses heading east have had a top record in feature races. This horse came over with Lindsey Smith who set up shop in Victoria. After a defeat in Adelaide when things didn't go right, he got a much better ride this time.

Sitting just off the leaders, Yendall swept up around the corner and had those leaders at the furlong. He only had to hold off the swoopers from the back and had enough in hand.

2018 - Humidor 6g (Teofilo x Zalika) ($21)

Humidor was a surprise

Jockey: Damian Lane, Trainer: Darren Weir

Barrier: 3, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 1:23.29

Margin: 0.1L, Track: Good (4), Starters: 11

2nd: Kementari (58.5kg), 3rd: Kings Will Dream (59.0kg)

Review: Once again Everest contenders were on the minds of many but it was older perennial who flashed late and got the bob. Much of the attention was on Vega Magic and Kementari but Humidor had a lethal second up record and he produced.

The Godolphin horse was wide the trip and kept coming on the line but as he wound up, Lane got inside splits and made up good ground. It was an unbelievable day for Darren Weir with over half the card and he even got both winners of a dead heat. When your luck is in!
