Supercars veterans are setting the pace at the Adelaide 500 with Team 18's David Reynolds clocking the fastest practice time before qualifying.

The 39-year-old stopped the timer on a blistering one minute 19.480-second lap on Friday afternoon after finishing second-fastest in the weekend's opening practice session a day earlier.

It comes after 44-year-old Blanchard Racing driver James Courtney set the quickest lap around the Adelaide street circuit on Thursday, putting the table-topping young guns on notice.

Championship leader Will Brown (2772 points) notched the fifth-fastest lap on Friday, 0.241 seconds off the pace.

His 22-year-old Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney (2592) was two places and one tenth of a second further down.

Feeney was off Brown's pace on Thursday as well and must overcome a 180-point deficit in the weekend's two races to steal the title from the 26-year-old.

Tickford's Cam Waters (2344) was second-fastest while Walkinshaw Andretti United ace Chaz Mostert (2463) was third.

The Ford pair will be eager to seal a race win to finish their seasons, with their title chances out of reach.

Rising star Cooper Murray was 17th-fastest in the No.9 Camaro after the he was a last minute call-up for Erebus.

Murray replaced Jack Le Brocq, who he will line up alongside as a full-time driver in 2025, after the 32-year-old pulled out on Thursday night to return home for the birth of his first child.

Qualifying for the weekend's first race begins at 5.30pm (ACDT) followed by a top ten shootout at 12.35pm on Saturday.
