Tickford's Cam Waters has upped the pressure on the Supercars championship frontrunners, claiming his fourth pole of the season in Townsville.

Waters was the penultimate driver to take a solo crack at the top-10 shootout on Saturday and blitzed it with a 1:13.7232 lap.

After claiming the two fastest times during practice on Friday, the 29-year-old was more than three tenths of a second faster than Walkinshaw Andretti's Chaz Mostert.

Mostert (1074 points) is in third place in the championship standings with a sizeable points gap over the chasing pack of Nick Percatt (855), James Golding (845) and Waters (838).

Provisional pole sitter Will Davison was gutted not to have converted his rapid lap in qualifying into a first career pole.

The Dick Johnson Racing veteran will start race 13 in fourth position, behind fellow Ford drivers Waters, Mostert and Thomas Randle.

Jack Le Brocq was the quickest of the Camaro drivers in fifth, 0.4962 seconds off the pace after claiming the second-fastest lap in practice.

Second in the championship standings and coming off back-to-back race wins in Darwin, Triple Eight's Broc Feeney (1245 points), snagged eighth spot after sneaking into the shootout in 10th.

Championship leader Will Brown (1353 points) failed to secure a top-10 shootout berth and will start the 88-lap race from 13th on the grid.

A tropical North Queensland shower swept over Reid Park shortly before the shootout and kept the track slippery even as the sun beat down.

The conditions were clearly still dicey when Grove Racing's Matt Payne, second out of the gates, slid out of turn 6 after getting a bit too wide on the apron, costing himself valuable time.

Still he finished ahead of Bryce Fullwood, who finished more than two seconds off the pace after a big lock up on turn 2.

Saturday's 88-lap race begins at 2.40pm (AEST).
