A wet week in Brisbane will give us a heavy track for racing at Doomben on Saturday.
The conditions shouldn't bother Hatchet who looks a nice bet in Race 7.
The Doomben specialist went around in an unsuitably short 1000m Class 6 at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday and just missed in a three-way thriller, coming from last on straightening. That effort followed a couple of outings in black-type races, the pick of them a third in the Group 3 Healy at Eagle Farm behind Zarastro.
The Robert Heathcote-trained gelding returns to a more suitable trip this Saturday. While he has not encountered a heavy track, his form in soft going reads very well.
The dangers are Rockribbed and Hellavadancer who will probably roll forward and take up the running. Apprentice Cody Collis, claiming 3kgs, can park in behind that pair from the favourable draw and with the cosy run should have plenty to offer late.
The other special comes in Race 4.
Tony Gollan's Warby has raced five times this prep for four minor placings, the latest five weeks ago when he chimed in late only to miss by a whisker in a similar race to this Saturday's contest. The premier trainer has given the five-year-old a brief reset, with a trial at Deagon on 6 August keeping him ticking over.
The form guide shows he has raced twice on heavy tracks for two unplaced runs, but those efforts were a lot earlier in his career, one of them being the ATC Sires. He has been able to quicken impressively in soft ground recently, so he is worth the gamble in the sloppier going.
Ryan Maloney reunites with the son of Hellbent which might be the key – he has two wins and a placing from three rides.
Ivan's Hero and I See You Coming will offer stiff opposition, but Warby's recent figures stack up most favourably against that pair and he is a great chance to break the frustrating run of outs.
