Say From SA – August 2

3 minute read

It proved a tough day at the office on the wet track at Morphettville last week.

Daytona Grey was well supported but could finish only third for us while the each-way play, Quick Siesta, raced handy to the pace before folding up and disappointing in the run home.

Let’s hope we can turn things around on Saturday on the Morphettville Parks circuit where the track is a Slow7 and the rail is in the true position.

Melbourne visitor Royal Island, prepared by John Salanitri, looks hard to beat in the fifth race on the program, Medallion Homes Handicap over 1400m.

The Benchmark 90 race has attracted just a field of seven runners following the scratching of one the favoured runners Detox.

Royal Island disappointed last time out when 10th in a 1400m Open Handicap at Flemington on July 19, a run that had come on the back of successive victories at Donald and Bendigo.

The track was rated dead at Flemington last time but was perhaps a touch firmer and connections of Royal Island put down his flop to the five-year-old not appreciating the firm track.

His two previous victories had come on slow (Donald) and heavy (Bendigo) so he’s certainly going to enjoy the give in the Morphettville Parks circuit.

Earlier in the day Conduction is one at good odds that could be worth a ticket.

The David Jolly-trained gelding has had the one run back from a spell, an eye-catching 1.5 length fourth over 1050m on the bigger Morphettville circuit 14 days ago.

What is appealing with Conduction, who lines-up in Race 3 the National Jockeys Celebration Day Handicap, a Benchmark 82 race over 1250m, is his impressive second-up record.

Fron seven second-up attempts, the son of Reset has recorded two wins and five minor placings.

While he’s only won four races, he has figured in the placings on 20 occasions from his 40 career starts with one win and eight placings from 12 tries at the trip and one win and 12 placings from 17 attempts at the course.

The negative is that he hasn’t saluted in 595 days, but the 2kg claim for Jake Toeroek brings him in with a winnable weight.

Good luck and good punting.
