The Melbourne Mail - March 17

3 minute read

The carnival is winding down but the final day at Flemington, Blamey Stakes Day, throws up some good betting races for punters.

We'll look to get off to a flyer with the bet of the day coming in the first in the form of Lindsay Park's Hear The Chant.

She did a good job winning first up when the betting said she was playing for keeps. She certainly was, controlling the race from a long way out under a patient Andew Mallyon and ripping home in good overall splits that led to a strong timefigure with the promise of more to come.

She goes to 1200m now but that hasn't held her up in the past and again she looks like getting into a controlling spot on the speed in a race that, depending on Sister Kitty Mac, looks like being run at no more than an even tempo.

If Hear The Chant can settle first two here, with a typical straight course tempo, her burst of speed can put these to bed and we are betting on that happening with prices around $2.80 worth taking.

For an each way play we roll on to race eight on the card, a competitive betting handicap over a mile.

The mile is the key to the race with several of the key chances up from 1400m. Abyssinian looks like relishing the longer trip having been beaten for early speed over 1200m two back and then strong at the end of 1400m last time at Pakenham behind a solid winner.

The win three back was one full of promise and while there is a chance that promise will be delivered upon next campaign rather than this time around she still looks well worth the gamble at each way odds at her first crack at the mile.
