The Listed Penny Edition is the feature on the Morphettville program.

Widgee Turf
Widgee Turf Picture: Racing and Sports

In the feature race, Widgee Turf only has to re-produce his effort in the PB Lawrence Stakes to be winning this Listed race.

While he had won a Victoria Handicap at G3 level, this was his best career performance two weeks ago.

He is at his perfect distance, is well suited at WFA and adores a track on the softer side should it end up that way.

Having basically never run a bad race, all he needs to be is close enough and he’ll be rattling home.

The barrier may mean we simply get a better price but remember he never takes up a position anyway.

Darren Weir has had plenty of success getting horses from various places but not often former maiden hurdle winners from Ludlow in the UK are the areas sourced from.

The Statesman has had nearly 12 months in the country and has kept improving.

So much so that he won a metro race at Flemington over 2000m carrying top weight.

He settled midfield but was three wide so gradually crept closer to be four lengths back at the 600m. He swept up but got tired and fell in.

Surely he will be better for that run and the longer trip. On top of that he drops in weight and meets a field hardly making many waves.

Theanswermyfriend is now the winner of his past three races in succession, following his win last week over 1519m at Moonee Valley with another smart all-the-way win. He went straight to the front from is good barrier (5), travelled nicely for Harry Coffey in front before increasing his advantage on turning for home and still having a clear break at the 200m. Although weakening nearing the post, he still had enough in hand to hold on for a narrow but good win. The favourite Widgee Turf went back from his wide barrier (13), was back in second last place in the 13-horse field before commencing a wide move approaching the home turn. He went widest of all on turning for home, got to a distant second nearing the 100m and made considerable late ground, failing only by a long head a the post. Waging War was seventh (between runners), got a split halfway down the straight and then battled on nicely to take third in a photo.
