Best From The West : Ascot - 23rd February 2019

3 minute read

The Detonator Stakes is the feature on the Ascot card and we think it’s the second leg of a Pike double.

Firstly, the opening race looks ripe for Seven Castles to open his account.

He was back in the field on debut in August and worked home nicely then but has spelled and trialled positively since.

Should be getting a sweet run in the race allowing Pike to ease him out into the clear and finishing over an even lot of three year olds.

It could be the start of a really good day as per usual.

We then jump on him again in the Detonator where the Perth Cup winner Star Exhibit is back already.

It is interesting that they are running him here however it is hardly an exciting line up and he only has to give the second top weight 3kg despite 21 points in ratings.

He’s been kept up to the mark with a trail since and to be honest seems great odds even though winning the Cup at 30s.

Pike can just sit him midfield off the draw and get moving with momentum before the corner.

Coming off a seven week break and a win in last month's Perth Cup (Gr.2, 2400m), Star Exhibit outclassed this field with an easy win, his eleventh and fifth stakes. He was one of the first away but at the 1600m found the desirable one out, one back position, maintaining that spot at both the 1200m and 800m. Jockey William Pike had him cruising approaching the last corner, eased another width wider turning in then ran up to the two leaders at the 200m. He took over, drew clear then eased down yet was out by a length and half at the line. Let's Twist led them down the back and around the last corner, was caught to co-lead into the straight then was headed but fought back well to grab second right at the post. Cappo D'Oro caught the leader at the top of the straight and looked to hold second but was nutted on the line. Like A Butterfly tracked the winner into the straight and finished quite well to be in a good line up for the minors, narrowly fourth.
