Best From The West : Ascot – 23rd March 2019

3 minute read

It is the turn of the 2yos this week as they lay their cards on the table leading into the Karrakatta Plate.

Those races are pretty tough so we’ll try to head to something hopefully a bit easier.

In the Listed Grandstand Cup it is not that hard to see Achernar Star continuing his winning ways.

This 4yo was running around in the Railway and Kingston Town which were too hard for him at that time, meeting some elite horses.

He’s since spelled and run well coming through the provincial Listed races. Getting to the 1500m is no drama, especially from a lovely barrier where he can sit just off the speed again.

The son of Gingerbread Man is not meeting a field in flying form and even giving weight to them all, his class can see them through.

For the value, tipping Like A Butterfly can bounce back here.

She went to Bunbury for the Cup in what ended up a funny race. Horses made long runs and it was last horse standing that won.

The mare was well backed in that race and despite the draw, she might be ridden for luck and able to swoop on them late.

You only have to go back 12 months when she was second in the Oaks and the Derby to see what she is capable of.

Favourite and top-weight Achernar Star made it back-toback stakes and career wins, his sixth from 18 starts, and he would have been most unlucky not to win. He was away in second then took up a lovely trail in third (rails), a position he held past the 800m to the 500m from where he was pocketed well into the straight. He pulled three wide at the 200m, took a few strides to steady before edging out to a deserved and hardy half-length win. Variation sat one out in sixth at the 500m, pulled four wide into the straight and kept up a strong run to the line for second. Tellem We're Comin was last turning in and wide out ran home very well to grab third in a photo with Mizlicki, who came out of the pack between runners for fourth.
