Watermans Bay wins 2014 Ascend Sales-A J Scahill Stks Group 3 $200,000 at Ascot (WA) 3yo+, 1400m.
Watermans Bay went back in the early stages and settled in last place in the ten-horse field and remained there to the home turn. He fanned very wide on straightening, put in a strong run in the centre of the track to challenge at the 150m and then finished too well, drawing clear to score impressively by just over a length.
The Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Magnifisio had a good run, fifth between runners, switched out on turning for home and looked the winner when she took the lead at the 150m but found the late-closing winner too good, holding on for a good second.
Antique Belle was just past midfield, was shuffled back nearing the home turn but got a good split on straightening and kept battling on quite well to take third.
Testamezzo was eighth, between runners, switched out on turning for home and fought on soundly for (3.2 lengths) fourth.
