Securing a perfect trip in fourth, on a genuine tempo, The Diamond One ranged to challenge at will passing the 400m, gained a narrow advantage in a line of horses at the 200m and displayed a terrific amount of resolve to secure the win.

Content to settle outside the leader, Procurement was unbalanced slightly between horses early in the straight but launched into a challenge to the inside of The Diamond One and although giving her all she came up just short.

Irion travelled boldly three back on the inner, finally tracked into the clear at the 100m and surged late for a close third.

Emerald Queen circled from last to be the widest into the straight and staged a huge run for fourth.

Having received a lovely trip in the trail, Oceania worked off to level in front at the 200m and fought hard for a close (0.8 lengths) fifth.

Cuddle Stakes (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

It was not a fast run G3 mile for fillies and mares only so the fact one sitting fourth the outer ran down a rival that sat outside the leader was no surprise. The time of 1:35.71 is nothing special either but the actual winner and significance of her in the last six weeks has made The Diamond One the most admired galloper in the country. The Diamond One is now more than just the pride of the South Island she is also the gem of New Zealand racing for her deeds. The mare on February 6th won on her home track of Wingatui the G3 White Robe Lodge days after her trainer Steve Anderton tragically lost his life. She did not just win she bolted in with a class display and so made a nation very proud. Claire Anderton, the wife of the late Steve, took over the training and with help from Hec Anderton (father of Steve and he used to train in partnership with his son) the calling of family being answered gained the respect of all. The Diamond One was winning her seventh race today from just seventeen starts and is raced by the Dennis Bros, who have had top gallopers for many decades in the South Island. This mare is quality and has been in the first four an impressive fifteen times and handles all types of footing. She got a nice sit fourth the outer today and cantered up to lodge a bid at the 300m before taking the front and holding a slender lead to the line. The 5yo mare had to fight today to score and fight she did with the will only good racehorses have. The Diamond One at the moment is a triple G3 winner and a single Listed winner plus she has as fourth at G1 when a 3yo filly. She will try for G1 against her own sex most likely at Te Aroha in the new few weeks safely thought fit and well today. Procurement fought ever so hard and to go down a nose showed this 4yo mare has bigger races ahead. Irion ran on well once into clear air for third and has bloomed since coming to New Zealand from Australia plus she should tackle G1 next time out at Te Aroha too like some others from the field. The eyecatching big late finish from last by Emerald Queen was the effort against the race pattern and this also South Island mare is more than tidy when at her peak. Oceania, the stablemate of the runner up, fought on well considering she was tackling G3 for the first time. Te Hana was fair but G3 at this stage may be a bit rich though being a 4yo her time will come. The trio of Team Zimmerman runners got the trifecta but the one you do not want of being the last three home. They were not beaten that far to be fair so can form reverse next time out all of them. Another emotional win by The Diamond One and special mention to the professionalism shown by now trainers Claire Anderton and Hec Anderton. This will be a solid future form reference race as too much talent on display for it not to be.
