2015 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup Group 3 April 18 - Riccarton Park

3 minute read

Scapolo wins 2015 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup Group 3 NZ$ 100,000 at Riccarton Park (NZ) , 2000m.

Race favourite Scapolo travelled boldly behind the leader throughout. He was clear to challenge two off the rail when rounding the home turn and after taking control at the 250m he proved too good. Having pressed forward off a wide gate to lead, Sureasyouwereborn was nicely rated and found a good kick when challenged at the 300m to hold second comfortably.

Drawing away from the pack with a late close for third, Miss Three Stars had tracked into the clear early in the straight after racing in midfield.

Fourth placed Eva Keeneva ran home strongly for fourth, and after being a clear last Spring Cheer staged a massive run wide out for fifth.

Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (G3)

Type: OPEN

Class counted in this not very strong G3 at WFA event over 2000m with Scapolo winning easier than the threequarters of a length would indicate. The race was sedately run (the Listed 3yo filly event two races earlier ran four lengths faster) so in a sprint home Scapolo was not going to be beaten after racing handy. Scapolo loves Riccarton and it was his thirteenth career win and second here at Group level. The pacemaker Sureasyouwereborn is durable and keeps going so for a 4yo mare her future looks rosy especially in the South Island. She looks a prime candidate for something like the NZ Cup as 3200m will suit the mare down to the ground. Miss Three Stars ran a sound third and is in good order at the moment. Eva Keeneva was brave after sitting wide and just cannot go a poor race it seems at Riccarton. Spring Cheer was an unusual effort as she got going well but far too late from the back. She is the stablemate of the winner and won the NZ Cup two seasons ago here so is taking time to find form again but it is not far away. Chapel Star was better today while the rest were just fair but in such a slow time that should be expected. The winner can clean up in New Zealand and on wet ground not many can swim better. The second back to fifth finishers all have good stamina and will be likely players in the spring especially at handicap level.
