2015 J Turkington Castletown Stakes Listed May 30 - Wanganui

3 minute read

Stella Di Paco wins 2015 J Turkington Castletown Stakes Listed NZ$50,000 at Wanganui (NZ) 2yo, 1200m.

Stella Di Paco was a surprise $45.30 winner, improving on her two unplaced starts to break her maiden in this Listed race. She was smartly away and went to the front being able to set an average mid-race tempo before striking several challengers nearing the home turn. But she responded well and kept fighting back to score a gutsy win.

Miss Fi was a handy fourth before moving up strongly coming to the home turn to challenge at the 200m. She then kept battling on well for a sound second, just finding the winner a bit too strong.

Massa Lu raced outside the leader, challenged well at the home turn, took a narrow lead shortly afterwards and then kept fighting on for a close-up third.

Mr Conductor was second last in the nine-horse field, fanned deep rounding the home turn and ran on well for a very good (0.6 lengths) fourth.

Favourite Hover missed the start, was then sixth on the rails but travelled quite keenly in stages and disappointed in the straight, tiring to finish (7.5 lengths) seventh.

This was a total form reversal by the juvenile filly Stella Di Paco after being beaten by big margins in her first two starts. The filly had been beaten almost twenty-one lengths and then eleven lengths so no surprise she was the rank outside in this Listed event and paid $45. She led and got away with some cheap sectionals then kicked on best the inside to win in 1:14.01 for the 1200m. The inside and on pace bias was rampant at Wanganui all day and going wide for better footing was pointless and detrimental to the chances of any runner. Stella Di Paco was a first stakes win in New Zealand for her sire Paco Boy and a first blacktype for the newly formed training pair of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. The runner was also a filly in Miss Fi that race close throughout while the third finisher to emphasis the race bias was Massa Lu that sat second the outer throughout. The best run was the fourth finisher Mr Conductor that would have won but for a nasty check early and settling down a clear last. He ran home hard down the outer and it was totally against the track bias all day and this result in particular so was even more meritorious. Speedy Achiever was strongly supported late and found the line from the back in the manner of a gelding that should strengthen further as a 3yo. The big flop was the hot favourite Hover that jumped inwards badly at the start and cost Mr Conductor the race. Hover was never ever travelling at any stage and was weak the run home. Two visiting fillies in Frazzle and Benoit were beaten out of sight with the former stopping after a wide run, so possibly forgiveable, but the latter was detached by a big amount across the top and never hit out. Hard to trust the result as the track bias today was blatant and this was the slowest run 1200m on the entire day.
