Werther wins 2015 Pages Event Eagle Farm Cup Group 2 $250,000 at Doomben (QLD), 2200m.
New Zealand three-year-old Werther proved too good for his older rivals and staked sound claims for next week’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) with an impressive win. He enjoyed a good trip in fourth place, one out and one back, before moving up (three wide) nearing the home turn. He then dashed to the front at the 200m and raced away for an easy win.
Favourite Moriarty was quickly away before easing to race in third place on the rails. He was heldup briefly rounding the home turn, eased deep into clear running on straightening and kept running on quite well for second, having no chance with the winner.
Epingle settled nicely outside the leader (Hawkspur), travelling at a steady tempo. She moved up coming to the home turn but just battled on in the straight to take the minor placing.
Foreteller was second last in the small six-horse field before improving quickly (deep) at the 600m as the pace increased. He then plugged on quite well, late for (3.1 lengths) fourth.
