Who Shot Thebarman scored most impressively. He settled at the tail of the seven-horse field, following a steady early pace. James McDonald, dissatisfied with the tempo, let him stride up from the 1400m and went to the front on passing the 1200m. He then travelled along well, opening a break on the field rounding the home turn. He then drew right away over the closing stages, clearly out-staying his rivals in a brilliant win. It was also an excellent ride by James McDonald who showed great initiative in the mid-stages.

Tall Ship settled near the tail of the field and was last at the home turn. He went deep on straightening, and while having no chance whatsoever with the winner, he ran on particularly well for a very good second.

South African-bred stayer Do You Remember was handily place on the rails most of the way, got through to second at the 400m and held on quite well to take the minor placing.

Sertorius led in the early stages, was second from the 1000m and battled on in the straight for (9.8 lengths) fourth.

Favourite Rising Romance raced outside the leader in the early stages, was fourth from the 800m but disappointed in the straight, fading to finish last.
