Madam Victoria wins 2016 Speight’s Timaru Stakes Listed NZ$50,000 at Ashburton (NZ), 1400m.
Consistent performer Madam Victoria appreciated the Dead6 track and captured her eighth win (fourth stakes) from 20 starts when winning here. She drew wide and jumped with them yet dropped back to be worse than midfield down the back. Apprentice jockey, Racha Cuneen, made a brisk forward move four wide passing the 500m and was widest but one turning in. At the 300m the field lined up across the track, all with chances, but Madam Victoria was full of running and powered away over the last 100m to win well and convincingly.
Toma Valea was last down the back but before turning in got on to the winner’s back and followed her yet could not accelerate as quickly, grinding past the rest to grab second.
Locket was handy on the outer to the turn but went wide and was also not able to match the winner’s acceleration but ran better than most to hold on to third.
Favourite Illuminati had every chance but faded to finish fifth.
