Miss Three Stars was allowed to drift despite her nice draw of six and passing the post with a circuit remaining had just two behind her. She remained well back until the 1200m before hunting up three wide to be slightly worse than midfield by the 700m. Continuing to move forward she was right behind the leaders but wide just before the last corner. Into the straight, she settled down to her work to be almost alongside the leading group and a hundred metres later had the lead. She broke clear, was challenged on her inner but held on well to defend her 2015 Riverton Cup title.

Motorboat Mike was fifth down the back but lost his position before starting the bend. Passed by the winner before the last corner, he tracked her into the straight and but stayed close. Once into the clear, he ranged up (inner) but was not able to edge past for a well fought second.

Revelator was fourth last at the 600m, tracked the winner into the straight but took time to wind up. When the race was over he ran on strongly over the last 150m but the first two had too much of a break.

The Listed Riverton Cup (2147m) saw Miss Three Stars defend her crown from one year ago and go back-to-back. The now 6yo mare had not won a race since then and only had half a kilo more twelve months later when carrying 57.5kg today. She was rather well in at the weights considering since last year aside from the win she had achieved four Open handicap placings and one of them came at G3 under 57kg. The mare sat back and then improved wide across the top before unleashing a good surge to grab the front at the 250m. She had one threat in Motorboat Mike and they did come together late in the race that saw a protest eventuate but the placings stood. Miss Three Stars has now won six of thirty-two starts and at 2100m or further has raced three times for two wins and a close second. Motorboat Mike tried hard after being midfield between runners for much of the race then coming up wide before the home turn. Revelator ran on well late for third after settling down ninth then going wide before the home turn. Sureasyouwereborn ran an improved race for fourth considering she was wide midrace to the home turn and reached third at the 200m. No Emotion was seen running on okay late from last on settling while his stablemate Commanding Oak was also warming up late. The leader Come Fly With Me once headed by the eventual winner weakened out while The Bishop was plugging on late from back on the inner. The rest were battling or never looked likely the run home and Sadlers Rock ran a very distant last but had a nightmare run wide in the midfield throughout so had to stop. This was South Island depth so nothing here would be considered at blacktype level in the North Island. However no reason to think why Miss Three Stars would not come back and try for the threepeat of Riverton Cups next autumn.
