Veladero wins 2016 Gloaming Stakes Group 3 $200,000 at Rosehill (NSW) 3yo, 1800m.
In a close finish where the first six horses finished less than a length apart, the Chris Waller-trained colt Veladero progressed from a Warwick Farm midweek win to take out this Group Three race. He soon crossed to take the lead and then settled well before lifting the pace from the 600m. He then kept fighting back gamely to score a narrow but good win, sprinting home in a smart 34.32 (last 600m).
Honeywine had a nice trip in fifth place on the rails, got along the inner to be in a challenging position at the 300m and then kept battling on well to hold a good second.
Prized Icon was a handy fourth, but was held up on turning for home. He was hindered at the 100m and then fought on for fourth but was promoted to third on protest.
Retaliation raced in sixth place, moved up well (deep) nearing the home turn, challenged at the 200m but then drifted out under pressure and was third past the post but was relegated to fourth on protest.
Tumultuous was back in eighth place and did well in making ground along the rails for (0.6 lengths) fifth.
Swear settled back in ninth place, got a split at the 300m and made ground, without threatening, in the sprint home for (0.8 lengths) sixth while the other favoured runner High Mist travelled a bit keenly in seven place, made a wide move on straightening and ran on fairly well for (1.5 lengths) seventh.
