The field broke evenly although Underthemoonlight, under apprentice Timothy Johnson, allowed his mount to drop back yet not far off the lead soon after the start. The pair kept the leaders well in sight by sliding up on the inside to be handy down the back. At the 1000m they were barely three lengths from the pace but saving much ground around the bend. With 600m to run they were even closer and in perfect position to challenge, which they did upon straightening. Saving so much ground Johnson shot the mare clear nearer the fence and the young apprentice just had to keep her going and she ran away from them over the last 200m to win impressively and easily.

Slice Of Class sat behind the winner around the bend, weaved her way through before the turn and made a determined run widest out on the track, finishing best of the rest but a distant second at the post.

Rocknrolla was last down the back, still last at the 600m, then weaved through them just before the last corner to make her run, finishing well, doing her best work at the line, to grab third short of the line.

Rich Hill Stud Breeders Stakes (G3)

The track at Hawera today was a holding heavy bog without any doubt from the get go so totally disregard that the NZ stipes left it at a Slow9 all day as that is not born out whatsoever by the dreadful times and margins of defeat. Wind can only dull times by so much and it goes in one direction so that head wind can be a tailwind at different parts of the track and so it balances up to some extent. The track was awful and the centre lanes or wider was where every runner went from the outset in a blatantly obvious display of this is a heavy sticky track. The first race maidens ran 1:44 and change for a mile and the next race the Ratings75 runners ran 1:44 and change for a mile, which is fifty lengths inferior to standard time of 1:36 for an ordinary horse, so it was a non-argument that the track was a heavy holding bog. The winner and very easily of this G3 fillies and mares feature over 1400m was Underthemoonlight by six lengths in 1:29.44 (that is about thirty-three lengths inferior to standard time for this trip). She was in the rear quartet early but improved closer in across the top and led turning for home clearly reveling in the heavy footing. The 5yo mare swam clear to win her third race from fifteen starts and gain her first blacktype success to go with fourths at Listed and G2 level. All her wins so far have come at the 1400m. Slice Of Class ran on well from worse than midfield for second and her broodmare days are near. Rocknrolla ran home strongly the last bit to get third and is now a stablemate of the winner so has improved since coming here. Bonnie Girl disputed the pace and was run over into fourth with the footing not helping this mare at all. Heni and Britt Ekland were fair at best while Cassie Anne was one of the very few running on the closing stages. Honey Rider the favourite raced on the pace and stopped with the filly not liking the heavy bog one iota. Illuminati was poor for her ability and Hotshot Lass dreadful considering she was fourth at G3 just three runs ago, while Thistledonicely was outclassed. The winner Underthemoonlight is clearly a swimmer and can handle holding heavy bogs plus she is so competitive in fact on all sorts of track conditions. Her six length demolition showed the rest could not handle the obvious heavy glue so while she was superior it is not a true reflection. The form worth of the result becomes irrelevant and meaningless with the Slow9 rating allowed to stay all day as that is the howling error of the meeting and this G3 race.
