La Diosa stamped herself as the best filly in the country with a dominant win here. She gave a strong field a start and won decisively, with the racing style of an Oaks filly. The field jumped in line yet young rider Racha Cuneen allowed La Diosa to find her feet from barrier nine and they drifted back to be equal last (one out) down the back. At the 800m she was still last then Cuneen pulled widest out into the middle of the track, still giving the field a start. On the outside of the course, she balanced up and by the 300m was gathering in the leaders. By the 200m she was almost level but after that she put her head down and powered away, giving nothing else a chance, for an impressive win, her fourth in six starts.

Bella Gioia was worse than midfield (one out) down the back and round the big bend, worked into the clear before the last corner, ranged up to the leaders at the 300m and ran on quite well without a winning chance.

Sweepstake was third last rounding the bend, moved out wide turning in and ran on well to lunge into third short of the line.

Midnight Gossip found a clear run at the top of the straight and battled away to hold fourth while Astara was second turning in and with every chance battled away down the straight for fifth.

The G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) for 3yo fillies saw the clear cut favourite and pride of the South in La Dios bury her rivals from last on settling. It was her fourth win in six starts and the worst she has even finished is fourth and even that was an eyecatcher. She won by a length and a half in 1:37.85 and created a hattrick of wins and a hattrick of first G1 success for her sire, rider and trainers. La Dios is by the champion Australian racehorse So You Think (14 wins including ten at G1) and was ridden by Racha Cuneen for trainers Matt and Mandy Brown. The race prior was run and won in near half a second quicker and also saw a swamper on the by now chipping out badly track. Belle Gioia ran a sound second but had her chance after sitting seventh not spending a penny the outer then striding up into the lead at the 200m before getting windburn by the winner soon after. The cut in the ground clearly helped her today. Sweepstake kept coming from back and wide to nab third on the post so the first three home came from seventh or worse midrace. Midnight Gossip unfortunately lost the third placing on the line and the blacktype value that is associated and is lightly tried like Sweepstake. Astara sat outside the leader and fought on okay for fifth while It’s Time For Magic after taking the front at the 1100m was run over the final 200m. Mystery Show was a fair seventh but overall not her usual stout finishing-self. Zigwig battled okay while Glass Slipper never looked likely after being tardily away then hampered plus she had a poor post race recovery so all was not well with the still maiden filly. Royal Fashion can be forgiven as she had a hard run wide fourth or fifth throughout so in fact did okay not to drop right out (the leader only beat her home a length). Incantessimo was outclassed and a clear last at the line as expected. Decent strength field of fillies but a shame the track was so poor as it clearly dulled the hopes of many but to be realistic the winner La Dios had them covered no matter track conditions. This will be a good future source race, as it often is, with the kicker being the strength of fillies and racemares in New Zealand racing across the board with all the advantages they have in terms of weight allowance and bonus stakemoney and more races to compete in each and every season.
