Man From Uncle wins 2017 Eskimo Prince Group 3 $150,000 at Randwick (NSW) 3yo, 1200m.
The Anthony Cummings-trained Man From Uncle was a surprise winner resuming here at his fourth start, and put up a really smart effort. He began well but was caught three wide (without cover) in fifth place. He moved up well (wide out) at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and then finished too well to score a very good win.
Guard Of Honour was smartly away and settled outside the leader (Spending To Win). He got that better of that runner and looked the winner when he took the lead at the 200m but he could not hold of the late-closing winner to finish second after running a bold race.
Generalissimo was fifth on the rails, got through to third at the 200m and kept battling on well to hold that position at the post in a good second up effort.
Spending To Win went to the front, travelled well in the lead, was headed at the 200m and then held on well for (0.8 lengths) fourth.
The Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Comin' Through settled in second last place in the eight-horse field, went deepest of all at the home turn and kept finishing on well for (1.3 lengths) in a promising first up run.
On The Spot kept battling on nicely for a sound (2 lengths) sixth while the favourite Bryneich disappointed in finishing (2.2 lengths) seventh after being handy all the way, seemingly finding the step up in class too challenging.
