2017 Cafe Cuba Flying Hcp Listed April 1 - Awapuni

3 minute read

Maybe Miami wins 2017 Cafe Cuba Flying Hcp Listed NZ$50,000 at Awapuni (NZ), 1400m.

Top weight Maybe Miami settled third, one off the rail, from barrier three then soon after jockey Samantha Collett pushed forward to sit on the leader's flanks to keep the pace honest. They moved a little closer near the last corner then cruised up to take over at the 300m. Collett waited until the 150m then applied the pressure and they came away to win clearly for win eight from 24 starts.

Ja Ja Binks was second last in the small field turning in, switched towards the fence upon straightening and ran on quite well but was well held by the winner.

El Pescado was fourth turning in, moved wider and ran on but too late for third while the widest runner, Duffers Creek grabbed fourth, also very late.

A disappointing six runners only contested this Listed Open Handicap over 1400m and it was run a tepid rate from the outset. Maybe Mimi sat outside a controlled slow pace and when revved up to take the lead at the 300m was driven clear at the 150m to win by a length and a half. The time of 1:26.77 showed just how leisurely the race was run as it was seven lengths inferior to the juvenile feature held before this. Maybe Miami, trained in the South Island, likes wet ground and the 1400m plus he had been racing rather well this season. The 5yo gelding had in two other visits to the North Island over Summer finished fourth at G2 in December and then fifth at G1 under WFA in February. Today was his eighth win in twenty-four starts and this sprinter-miler has won on all types off footing too. Ja Ja Binks, a three-win 4yo mare that was a last start third in a Benchmark 85, ran on well from last in the small field to get the Listed second and her effort alone showed the field had no real depth. In her first attempt at blacktype she also paid a dividend for the first time at 1400m incredibly. El Pescado fresh up after sitting third hit a flat spot at the 200m then got going again with his second wind to finish a solid third and it had next upper written all over it. Shadow Fox the lone leader in the field had every chance as allowed to walk in front but once headed at the 300m fought on okay but still missed a place. He deadheated for fourth with Duffers Creek that had sat outside him and applied little pressure. Speech Craft was a poor last. Not a very strong field at all and coupled up with tricky wet ground it made for a dubious race and result.
