After bolting in by more than three lengths on debut, something similar was expected here and favourite Ardrossan lived up to that promise with a decisive win. Rider Danielle Johnson took full advantage of barrier one and shot the colt to the front. They were pressured soon after to the home straight but Johnson did not panic, gave him a shake once balanced and they drew away. Inside the 200m, the race was safe and they eased a little to win very comfortably.

Haussmann was last around the last corner, was widest at the top of the straight, still last at the 300m and ran on best of the rest for second.

Aquilo had no luck, turned for home second last, was blocked for a run several times then flashed into third late from Not Usual Trip who had every chance but kept on for fourth.

Seven of the nine races had a massive on pace bias and that included jumps races too with just a couple of mile events seeing closers down the outer prevailing. The mile events significantly were two of the biggest fields on the day and the closest on settling a dividend payer came from in either of these events was fifth the outer. The rail being out 4m today at Te Rapa had a big bearing as usual and the footing was iffy and patchy in places too. This Listed juvenile event over 1100m saw the Australian bred Ardrossan embellish his already burgeoning reputation with another clear cut win to remain unbeaten. The colt had won his clockwise debut easily by leading and today left-handed did the same but not before being attacked savagely from the 800m by Santuzza that ended up running gassed and dead last beaten over eleven lengths. Ardrossan shrugged off the inexplicable attacker and powered away the run home to win by three and three-quarter lengths in 1:04.65. His future is now in Australia for the Mick Price yard and he could be a Spring contender in 3yo blacktype races. Haussman a maiden ran home strongly for second after an awkward start and settling down last in a gap to the home turn. He will be a winning a race very soon if not next time out on the basis of this effort. Aqulio ran a sound third albeit distant after an awkward start too plus he was badly held up at the 350m until the 200m then having to be angled widest for clear air 100m out. He hit the line well and this Australian bred colt looks a player for Spring blacktype honours but in New Zealand. Not Usual Trip was a disappointing fourth and maybe it was a directional thing. Sophie’s Choice, a maiden filly, was a distant fifth but is a winner in waiting when she can get a draw and face all non-winners. Beyond Dispute flopped for the second time in his career left-handed. Santuzza was racing keen early but once she attacked the outer from the 800m was then never ever able to come back under her rider whatsoever and the filly stopped like a pricked balloon to run last. She has led in all her previous starts so needs a strong rider if she is to attack then attempt to be somehow restrained because the filly wants to rip once given her head. The win by Ardrossan was impressive after being taken on by an unrestrainable rival it seems and he is a colt with that will to win. The two maidens in the race Hausmann and Sophie’s Choice are winners in waiting while Aquilo looks like an ideal type for the G1 2000 Guineas at Riccarton next season in November.
