Gallic Chieftain wins 2017 Atc Winter Cup Listed $125,000 at Rosehill (NSW), 2400m.
Last start Moonee Valley winner and French import Gallic Chieftain scored his fourth win from nine starts in Australia. Under Dean Yendall, they settled third (rails) from barrier one with a circuit to run. The early pace was slow. Gallic Chieftain dropped back to fifth passing the 1200m but held the rails to the 600m before easing one out to get into a challenging position. Upon straightening there was plenty of room four out and he ran up, had a great battle to the 50m then gradually pulled clear late to win by three quarters of a length.
Consistent Montauk was third most of the way, shared the lead at the 300m then had a great battle with the winner to the 50m before being headed, for a solid second from top weight Destiny's Kiss, who was second last past the 600m, found room at the 200m and finished well for third.
Soviet Courage had a wall of runners to pass at the 300m then got clear when the race was over for a fair fourth.
