Among a field of some sharp three-year-olds, Bostonian maintained his unbeaten record, now three wins from three starts, with a hard-fought win here. Under Leith Innes from barrier three, he began as well as any but Innes allowed him to ease into fourth then fifth, one off the fence at the 700m. Before straightening, they found room three out and into the straight had a clear view. Innes waited, balanced then drove the colt up to challenge but didn't collar the leader until inside the 50 metres, nabbing the decision right on the line in a headbobber.

I Got You lay second around the bend and into the straight, took over narrowly at the 150m and fought hard to the line for a solid second.

A top run from Irish Flame who was last at the 700m and turning in, weaved between runners and finished well for a close-up third from Getty, who led to the turn, got clear at the 250m but found nothing to the line, barely holding fourth.

El Roca-Sir Colin Meads Trophy (LR)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 3yo only 1200m event drew a reasonable quality field but on testing worst side of slow ground this result may prove to be irrelevant once onto better footing, so this could be a total forgive. The grass was very long and the footing poor plus the times all day were very ordinary to say the least. Bostonian, a noted wet tracker, remained unbeaten when he scored by a nose after getting sit behind the leaders and then moving up turning for home to loom large. He took the entire lengths of the straight to get up and won in 1:14.83 to take his record to three from three and is by a deadest wet track sire. I Got You just out of maidens was game in defeat after sitting outside the pace and taking the front with 100m to go only to lose the bob on the line. He looks to have scope but whether he is dry track competitive is unknown at this stage like the winner. Irish Flame was a massive third and may have beaten the first two home with a couple more strides and this known wet tracker came from dead last on settling and was still there across the top. A tardy start saw him out the back then he got through and off at the 300m to reach fourth at the 200m before really knuckling down to attack the line. Getty set the pace and wilted once headed the final 100m to finish fourth beaten just over two lengths. He had every conceivable chance and hard to think he is competitive in Australia at this stage if he could not put this lot away. All his form has come on wet ground so until a dry track outing happens the asterisk applies and that is the case for many of these it should also be noted. Griffin ran on okay after getting back on the inner and he will come into his own as the trips get further, just as his half brother Gingernuts did. La Mia Stella, a maiden filly, was noticed running on late albeit for a distant sixth and her effort also puts a query on just how strong this field really was and if it was just as a result of wet ground. Sophie’s Choice did not do the ground and had a wide run too so expect to see a different filly when back on improved footing. Sacred Rebel was tardy and settled in the rear duo then never ever looked likely running greenly at times. He needs to be seen on decent footing to make an informed judgment as he has the physique to progress. Summer Monsoon was a dreadful last after trailing the leaders on the inner and does not cop ground as wet as this clearly. Cut out of the ground is okay but not when into the slow to heavy brackets plus last season he ran second on good footing at Listed level behind a since G1 winner that then ran second at G1 in Australia. The footing was too bad today to say this result could be trusted further into the 3yo season as some of these could turn around many lengths deficits back onto decent ground. This whole meeting looks dubious and only wet track relevant as a guide because the surface presented was so visually bad with lengthy grass and the times even in attack races were very poor.
