2017 Cambridge T’bred Wanganui Cup Listed December 2 - Wanganui

3 minute read

All In Vogue wins 2017 Cambridge T’bred Wanganui Cup Listed NZ$50,000 at Wanganui (NZ), 2040m.

All In Vogue found the one-out, one back sit with a circuit to run and maintained that position down the back straight. Rider Leah Hemi urged the mare a little closer approaching the last corner and when they straightened were ready to challenge three wide.

A few strides were needed before running up to take over, Hemi then put the whip away in the last 75m, easing clear over the final stages to win with a neck to spare at the line.

Blathwayt sat sixth, one out down the back. He then tracked the winner to the last corner and straightened to challenge, four deep. He looked a danger at the 100m but was outstayed.

Balham sat third (rails) down the back, was blocked at the 250m then ran on steadily to be just another half neck back.

Cambridge T'bred Wanganui Cup (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed 2040m Open Handicap drew a modest only line up of nine runners and was held on good footing but most of them are wet trackers. Three of the field are not or anywhere near Open Class so the depth was dubious and the weights perplexing to say the least. The best weighted runner by miles in All In Vogue won the race by a neck in 2:06.78 after getting the perfect run fourth the outer. The 5yo mare prior had run second beaten a neck in an Open Handicap at 54kg and today had the same weight so was rather well in especially considering the winner of that race went up a brutal 4.5kg and ran third today. This was her sixth win in twenty-seven starts and importantly four of them have come on good footing and two on dead/easy ground. It was her second Listed win with another coming as a 3yo filly over 2000m. Blathwayt has had an ordinary season so far with just one placing in six starts prior but was more like his old self today as the now 8yo kept coming from the back after moving wide before the home turn. Balham fought for third after trailing on the inner and was only beaten half a length despite giving the winner a massive 4.5kg on the last time they met when separated by just a neck. Meeska Mooska soon led and was run over the final 200m to finish fourth but fought very hard under his 59.5kg and was beaten less than three-quarters of a length. Snow Secret got back and was running on late well enough with the possibility she may need some give in the track to really let go the run home. Her honesty this season so far however cannot be doubted and she will be on the usual Cups path over Summer and into the Autumn. Quintessentially is a just a three-win mare but she finished close up after being very keen fifth the inside for the first half of the race. Hushed has only been fair this time in and wilted after sitting second the outer, with his record showing he is best when given some cover. Effectav was outclassed as three-win mare but would win if put back into her proper grade. Cruiser was the worst weighted runner in this at 59.5kg for a three-win gelding that had not won a race in a year and he never looked like clearing the rear to be beaten just under five lengths. His weight in this showed the field had no real depth whatsoever. All In Vogue still has more wins in store while Balham and Snow Secret can still play a role in the Summer and Autumn Cups to come. Not a very strong field at all and the winning time was just two lengths superior to the Ratings75 (four grades inferior supposedly) earlier in the day won by a 7yo that had not scored in two years prior to today.
