Nathan Berry feels he's on the cusp of a career-defining spring carnival which could elevate him to the upper echelon of the Sydney jockeys' room.

Berry upstaged odds-on pop The Gallows with his father Kevin's horse Sailor's Farewell in the Broadmeadow mile at Newcastle this afternoon, his second win of the carnival after Magic Cassius's salute in yesterday's Hurricane Stakes.

It continued the 22-year-old's strong recent run which has already netted him the Group 3 Tramway Stakes (1400m) with Malavio, and the Group 3 Run To The Rose with Va Pensiero.

“I've probably ridden about 10 winners for him, he always turns them out in perfect order,” Berry said.

“Dad said to me he won't get beaten. Riding a winner for Dad is like riding a Group winner.”

Berry is preparing for another big weekend in Sydney where he'll ride Malavio in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) ahead of next month's Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), and Va Pensiero in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m).

“I'm just hitting my form. I'm very happy with how everything's going I'm fit and healthy and I'm riding at the best of my career at the moment,” Berry said.

“Malavio's a special horse for mine, he's close to my heart. Va Pensiero's found a spot in there for sure.

“He'll run over 1100m on Saturday, back in grade a bit, and then he'll go to Melbourne.”
